Admission as certified Specialist Solicitor (“Fachanwalt”) in Germany
A provable "quality mark" and proof of a real professional specialization of an Attorney-at-Law in Germany is it, to become permitted to keep the title of a Specialist Solicitor (“Fachanwalt”).
This title can be given by the Bar Association. The title is only conferred by the responsible Bar Association, after an attorney has finished a variety of theoretical examinations. He must have finished in the respective juridical field where he wants to become specialized a Specialists Course of at least 120 time hours and he must have passed several written controlling examinations – in each case 5 hours long – successfully.
Besides, the lawyer must prove an extensive practical experience: He must have worked for about several years in a large number of extra-judicial and judicial cases from different subranges of the respective juridical field successfully.
Moreover, to maintain the title (Specialist Solicitor / “Fachanwalt”), the professional attorney must prove, that he regularly passed further education and advanced training about the new developments of the respective juridical field: He must prove yearly, that he had academically published in his legal area or had finished at least fifteen hours of legal advanced training – as a listener or lecturer–.
Purpose of the extensive procedure is to prevent a possible abuse or an “incorrect labeling” with supposed specializations.
The Hanseatic Bar Association Hamburg has awarded to Attorney Dr. Delventhal the titles of a Specialist Solicitor for the Law of Succession / Inheritance Law (“Fachanwalt für Erbrecht”), of a Specialist Solicitor for Labour Law (“Fachanwalt für Arbeitsrecht”) and of a Specialist Solicitor for Tenancy Law and Condominium Law (“Fachanwalt für Mietrecht und Wohnungseigentumsrecht”).
